GROUP PROJECT | 4 WEEKS | 2023
To study and understand commonly occurring science principles (in this case, Refraction) in every day life and create a product that utilizes celebrates that principle.

REFRACTION OF LIGHT.
Refraction is simply, the Bending of Light as it passes from one medium to another.

EXPERIMENTATION W/ LIGHT AND GLASS.

Can we connect
Refraction & Time??
We originally focused on clocks, watches, and related lifestyle products but decided to shift our focus to the abstract concept of time itself.
This transition posed a unique challenge: transforming something intangible into tangible products, a challenge we eagerly embraced.
WHY TIME?
Mind Mapping ways to Measure time.

Cyclic Motion of Time
Linear Passage of Time

Can we make time go around in Infinite Loops?
What if time was shown, in the space around us?
Can we use shadows to depict time?
Here’s the Final Concept, inspired by a Sunflower following the Sun.
A BRIEF EXPLANATION.
Our concept is a time-displaying product that utilizes light and refraction within a 24-hour cycle. It features a beam of light that initially indicates the hour of the day and then refracts through undulated glass surfaces, creating captivating patterns on the wall.
The top half represents 6AM to 6PM, while the bottom half signifies 6PM to 6AM, connected by magnets above and below a shelf. Glass surfaces and textured stainless steel form its structure, illuminated by internal white light.
brainstorming.
02.
At this point, it was time to start ideating.

Scales
Weight, Motion, Temperature & Vibrations.
Technology
Atomic, Quartz & Mechanical Clocks.
Influence of Nature
The way a Sunflower follows the Sun.
Sensory Engagement
5 Senses and the 5 Elements.
THE FOCUS AREAS OF OUR IDEATION PROCESS.
To design a product that depicts Time using the Scientific Principle of Refraction.
To push boundaries of normalcy and create something experiential, abstract and unique.

A lifestyle device that depicts time.

2 Twelve Hour cycles.
6 AM to 6 PM & 6 PM to 6 AM.

Refracted Patterns of Water formed on the Wall.
2 Halves joined by magnets.
PROOF OF CONCEPT.

Finalized Measurements for each component
Programmed the micro servo motor to move the slit in a 12 hour rotation.

05.
Made molds using MDF and metal scraps for the acrylic sheet
Made a MDF box to hold the Servo Motor, Arduino, Power bank and a light source.
Laser Cut all Acrylic/MDF Sheets for the top and bottom half of the product
Used cartridge sheet to make a circular surface with a slit, to create a beam of light.
Used Heat Gun to create undulations on the 7cm wide acrylic sheet using the MDF + metal scraps mold
Testing the light source, Achieved the patterns through refraction.

Undulated Acrylic Surface
Straight beam of light through a slit
Patterns formed on the wall due to refraction

Servo Motor
Part to create beam. Moving slit, connected to servo motor.
Base box, to store Arduino and power bank
